Ex-CEO arrested by WEX in Italy | BTC-ECHO
The alleged ex-CEO of the Bitcoin exchange WEX, Dmitry Vasiliev, was arrested in Italy. As the Russian department of BBC News reported, this information was leaked to them by three witnesses. This is another member of the club often described as dubious WEX arrested. The stock exchange of Russian origin, formerly operated by btc-e.com, was in the headlines last time in the trial of Alexander Vinnik. Vasiliev appeared there according to BBC News as a witness. With a volume of more than $ 4 billion, the media spoke of the biggest money-laundering scandal in history.
Fishing in the murky
So far, there is a lack of concrete official information about the Bitcoin exchange or the participants. The Guardia di Finanza has denied any information about the detention of suspects. The Russian Embassy, represented by Dmitry Gurin, also blocked requests with "no comment". In the case of Vinnik mentioned above, delivery to one of three countries is imminent: Russia, France or the USA. The process, which has been conducted for two years, has not been clarified. In the Vinnik trial, PwC's investigation has recently revealed further evidence that Iranian men have been involved in money laundering.
The tip of the eisberg
As we reported just over a year ago, there were problems with WEX paying out deposits in cryptocurrencies. After the detention of Vinnik in July 2017, Vasiliev took over the Bitcoin exchange. For the previously disappeared at btc-e.com credit Vasiliev promised to stand for WEX. But another year later there were problems again. The police of Tolyatti and the federal police of Kazakhstan were active after ads by victims of the Bitcoin exchange.
Vasiliev apparently tried to sell the Exchange to a former volunteer soldier in Ukraine, Dmitri Khavchenko. According to the BBC, this sale was never settled. To the contrary, Khavchenko told the news portal Coindesk, According to Khavchenko, the anonymous administrators have taken off with the Exchange private keys. He would not have accepted him as a new owner anyway, he said.
However, the Kazakh police opened the case of Vasiliev in April. He is said to have stolen a client on WEX his cryptocurrencies worth a total of $ 20,000. That should only be the tip of the iceberg.
Investigations in the Bitcoin ecosystem difficult
As in the case of Craig Wright and Vinnik, the authorities will take a while to come to an end. So it remains to be seen when which information comes to light in the case of Vasiliev.
